If you know your way aroundBrasilianisches Jiu-JitsuYou will know that there are two ways to train or compete in this sport: in the gi and alternatively without the gi. The word 'Kimono' is the name of the traditional uniform worn by a Jiu-Jitsu student (all known by their Japanese name:Kimono).
Next, let's take a closer look at themKimono halfVersion of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We can simply refer to this ashalf Kimono Jiu-Jitsube short
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu vs. Gi: What Are the Differences?
The main differences between both types of training can be divided into several categories, which we will see below.
The uniforms look completely different, of course, but let's take a look at some details about each one.
Traditional Gi uniforms
The traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform, calledKimono, it resembles the typical Japanese martial arts uniform (hence the wordKimonoconsists). BJJ gis are thicker than most other martial arts uniforms and more similar to a judo gi than, say, a karate uniform. Judo is another sport that relies on heavy grappling.
The belts, while different in color, are similar to those used in other martial arts.
no kimono uniforms
A no-gi uniform is little more than shorts and a rashie (rash guard) made of quick-drying materials. Many jiu-jitsu competitions require fighters to wear a conspicuous color that matches their current belt ranking.
An important feature of shorts is that they should not have pockets or other features where fingers or toes could get caught. Bathing suits are often forbidden for this reason.
you will findno gi trainingquite a sweaty experience!
differences in techniques
Heusignificant overlap between No-Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu. After all, they are the same sport. However, since there are clear rules prohibiting the wearing of any part of a uniform without a gi (this is a key difference), in practice the two styles have several differences.
Will jiu jitsu
Gi BJJ usually involves exploiting holds that you can land on your opponent's gi. There are some limitations such as B. sticking your fingers in your sleeves or pant cuffs, but generally you can grab your opponent's gi. Many jiu-jitsu chokes rely solely on this capability.
Well, give it BJJ
WeilGripping the uniform is prohibited in gripping without a gi, you must learn different ways to hold your opponent's limbs. You will learn terms like 'monkey grip' and hear, for example, that they are commonly used.
You will see (and experience) more attacks from the No Gi feet and ankles as they are more exposed in a No Gi Jiu-Jitsu match.
A rash guard wouldn't be a good catch even if it were allowed. But don't be tempted, especially in a tournament: you'll be DQ'ed!
Oft wird heftig darüber diskutiert, welches Training in realen Situationen oder im Straßenkampf besser ist. Derselbe Vergleich wird oft mit den populäreren Kampfkünsten gezogen.
Another more subtle difference is friction. farless friction without giThis allows you to escape from some positions and submission attempts that you couldn't escape from in the gi.
If you've ever tried a no-gi workout in a hot gym, you'll really notice the difference. Grips can be very difficult to maintain when everyone is sweaty.
Differences in rules between gi and non-gi competitions
Any Jiu-Jitsu organization, likeIBJJFIt has its own set of rules. There are entire sections in these rulebooks dedicated to gi and non-gi competition that we will not repeat in detail here. However, we have listed the most important differences below:
- Most Gi grips are allowed in Gi Jiu Jitsu. An even grip without a Gi is not allowed.
- The sash is part of the wrestling gi uniform and must remain attached at all times.
- Chalk and rash are often color-restricted in competition. For example, in gi-jiu-jitsu tournaments, gis are often restricted to being black, white, or royal blue. On the other hand, in many tournaments, rashies should reflect the color of your current belt.
- Because they are so different, the uniforms also provide varietyWeight Limits for Jiu-Jitsu Competitors.
Benefits of training without a gi
No-gi training tends to appeal to a wide variety of people. You may be interested in one day attending events such as those organized by the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCCSubmission Fighting World Championship) or perhaps subscribe to the idea that no-gi training better reflects a self-defense situation.
BothJiu-Jitsu courses with and without GiIt gives you the opportunity to practice a wide range of techniques. But if you have a special interest in No-Gi, great! Do what makes you happy.
A martial art like No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu will provide a fantastic focal point in your life where learning never ends. It's exciting, fast-paced and your fighting game will be sharp.
Fighting an opponent without a gi is excellent for any jiu-jitsu practitioner who relies on gi holds to be effective on the mats. The skills you need to focus on in the no-gi may not be your favorites when training in the gi. Therefore, getting out of your comfort zone might just be what you need.
The current trend at the highest level without a gi is to frequently attack and submit to the feet and ankles. Of all the techniques available, heel hooks seem to be the most popular non-gi submissions.
Jiu-Jitsu is also extremely good for your fitness if you can train regularly.
Is a Gi or No-Gi Better for Self Defense?
It's a reasonable question. But is there a good answer?
Anyone who has moved beyond beginner jiu-jitsu in gi or no-gi jiu-jitsu is in a good position to assert themselves against an opponent in competition or on the street.
Unless you're in a job that often involves you in physical altercations, it's hard to predict what you'll be wearing when you're in a fight. Standing in a beach parking lot or outside a nightclub in shorts or a bikini? Who knows.
NOeternal debate between the hardcore fans of the gi and the hardcore fans of the no-gi, both sides can make good points. A t-shirt might not be of any use to someone familiar with collared chokes, but if someone gets caught with a collared shirt or jacket, it's time for bed.
Our recommendation is that you visit as manyJiu-Jitsu ClassesMaster the techniques presented and incorporate them into your training. Both the Gi and the No-Gi have a lot going for them;don't limit your skills over trivial debates.
No-Gi vs. Gi Jiu-Jitsu for Beginners
If you're starting out as a beginner in Jiu-Jitsu, you shouldn't choose one or the other as the points above suggest. You should focus on learning as much technique as possible so that your sparring sessions become more productive sooner.
As the range of techniques you can use effectively grows, you will find that most are useful whether you train in the Gi or not.
Beginners are probably best served by taking Gi classes first.. This is because gi training is much more technical overall, while no-gi training is more of an included subset of jiu-jitsu gi. The body mechanics are pretty much the same, and you'll gain valuable skills either way.
As you train more and develop your skills, you may have a preference for gi or no gi. Until then, just focus on your technique, grappling, and submissions. The rest will come with time.
Is a gi or no-gi better for MMA?
MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is clearly more like No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu as far as Jiu-Jitsu goes.. The same lack of grip applies, so there are a lot of similarities there. But that doesn't mean an aspiring MMA fighter should avoid the Gi.
Learning how to roll the Gi is crucial for anyone serious about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Even if you never compete in a Gi. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu there is a lot to learn wearing a gi and you can always use the great variety of techniques learned in the gi to adapt to any type of competition without a gi. That being said, a successful mixed martial artist can never wear a jiu-jitsu gi.
You will need to spend a lot of time to master no gi holds for MMA. Controlling an opponent who is wearing very little, is sweaty, and wearing gloves is difficult. Applying a submission attempt under these conditions is just as difficult. Therefore, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is great for this part of your training.
Since a gi doesn't appeal to some people who want to become MMA fighters, many of them simply refer to themselves asfighter. Grappling is also a term used by fighters, so someone who describes themselves as a fighter may never have entered a jiu-jitsu gym.
You need toGetting comfortable without a BJJ Gi before accepting an MMA fight. It's an essential skill for modern MMA fighters, as these fights often end in a mad scramble for control on the ground.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches many things that you should never do when hitting your opponent is legal. For example, something as trivial as closing the guard is a very bad idea in MMA, but it's something a jiu-jitsu student can do automatically. Your MMA trainer will teach you what to do and what not to do in this sport.
Your fighting style must be suitable for your purpose. MMA fighters have different considerations and no one style is perfect for all situations.
So to put simply, Gi BJJ is training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a Gi on. No-Gi BJJ, on the other hand, means to grapple without the use of the traditional uniform.
