How to Sew a Japanese Knot Bag with Free Pattern

Before you start sewing your Japanese knot bag, you must first download the pattern and print it out on thick paper or cardstock. Choose what size bag you want to make! if you use thisComplete pattern as pdf, please enlarge about 125-135% for the small bag and 200% for the big bag or just print using these links for each section you will print in sectionsA,B,C,DYou can record together. These only come in one large size, so you'll need to print two and trim the second for the smaller bag.
As with all sewing projects, you should wash, dry and iron the fabric before incorporating it into your project. This will make your simple sewing project a success and reduce the chance of it pulling or tearing in the future. Especially since you might want to wash this bag at some point! Now it won't shrink in the wash! Let's start cutting and sewing to make this bag.

To make your Japanese knot bag, you should start by taking the patterned fabric and transferring the design of the pattern onto the fabric, right sides together. Repeat for the solid fabric. Be sure to cut the pattern twice for each fabric.

Make sure you have four pages. Two for indoors and two for outdoors.

Pin or pin the pattern pieces right sides together from the right notch to the left notch. Repeat with the solid pieces.

The next step in this Japanese knot bag sewing tutorial is to use a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You sew from notch to notch on the pattern and solid pieces, as well as the top of each handle.

Then cut small notches around the bottom curve of each piece.

Turn the solid part (inner fabric) right side out and tuck it into the patterned part (outer fabric) that is still visible from the wrong side. Line up your seams, raw edges and handles.

Your knot bag is taking shape! Now you will pin or pin the ends of the rounded part of the handles or the “cutout” of the bag.

Then sew around the "neckline" using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

We're almost done with your Japanese knot bag tutorial! Then make small notches around the curve of the handles of each piece.

Using the handles, turn the bag right side out so the patterned fabric is facing out. Pinch the seams so it lays flat and is easier for the next step.

Finally, to finish the stitching on your homemade Japanese knot bag, fold and press the raw edges of the 1/4 inch handles and 1/8 inch backstitch around the bag handle to finish the bag. Remember that now that you have created one, you can play with the free pattern and create others of different or the same size. So you can have one knot bag for the days when you need to carry more, or another for the days when you are light on clothes.

Now that you've made your Japanese knot bag, you have a super cute option to use for whatever you need to take with you! These are super customizable with the amount of different patterns and colors in fabrics that are available. Also, they make a great gift, I mean if someone made me one I would love it and you could even fill it with some items that they love too.
