Drake and 6 Celebrities You Didn't Know were avid sports card collectors (2023)

Just before the start of the new decade, no one expected sports cards to become the popular hobby it is today. hell evenErpelwent out of his way to spend over $200,000 to recently get this elusive Panini Triple Logoman card. But the Canadian rapper isn't alone in his love for the fans. There are some big names that have gone public about sports cards and how collecting them has become an absolute joy.

In addition to Drake, let's take a look at six other celebrities who are into sports cards and how far they've taken their hobby.

steve aok

Before making his mark as a world famous DJ, Steve Aoki was an avid sports card collector in his youth. But after he focused more on his music growing up, the hobby took a backseat and his collection turned to dust.

It wasn't until the start of the pandemic that Aoki started collecting sports cards again. With gigs hard to come by and recording studios closed during this period, Aoki had more time to rekindle her love for the hobby.

“During Covid, some of my friends in their 30s and 40s started tweeting about collecting cards. I really didn't think the cards had that great a financial value. I thought they were just cardboard, you know? When my friend said, 'Yeah, I just bought this card for $15,000 on Twitter,' I thought, 'What?'" Aoki said in a tweet.Interviewlike a rolling stone

And with the hobby in full swing, it makes sense that Aoki would do the same for his collection. To date, the musician and music producer has spent over a million dollars on various sports and tiered Pokémon cards.

The value of collectible cards has skyrocketed since the start of the pandemic. Collectors as DJ@Steve Aokiand other celebrities benefit. Why do you say that she has already spent over a million dollars on her collection?pic.twitter.com/HsknOlMT0v

As the fans heat up, hope Aoki paves the way for other celebrities to take advantage of the cards, as is the case with Drake at the moment. and with his owngift shopIt's no surprise that the DJ is among the most popular celebrities when it comes to collecting sports cards.

Snoop-Dog

Given the choice, everyone would always choose a car over something as simple as a sports card. But of course this is from a non-collector's perspective, which Snoop Dogg is not.

Nearly a year ago, the original rapper decided to sell his custom $30,000 Oldsmobile Cutlas for a PSA 10 disc of Kobe Bryant's 1996 Topps Chrome Rookie card. As it turns out, Snoop won the deal, as the late Black Mamba's stock rose significantly in the months that followed. Since a car, no matter how awesome, depreciates over time, it's safe to assume that the rapper-rated Kobe Bryant card does the opposite.

Mark Wahlberg

It's one thing for a collector to love sports cards over time. Passing that love on to the next generation and making them understand the ups and downs of the fans is something else. A good example, of course, is none other than Mark Wahlberg.

While the entire world was on lockdown, Wahlberg and his guys were actively breaking packs on social media. He got so far that his children started their own greeting card business, fueled by his father's influence over them.

Meanwhile, the Wahlberg guys have amassed an incredible collection of soccer, basketball and UFC Panini trading cards. And with the hobby showing no signs of slowing down, you can be sure this family will keep collecting.

Bryan Cranston

At first glance, you would never guess that Heisenberg collects baseball cards. The Breaking Bad character couldn't, but the actor behind the role could. From a very young age, Bryan Cranston was interested in sports cards, with the Los Angeles Dodgers being his favorite team. When he was a child, this obsession became something of a system unto itself.

“I had all my cards divided into teams and neatly organized in folders in my room. I also had fabric streamers for every team I won by trading in Bazooka Joe's bubblegum comics. Each one was wrapped in cellophane and hung on the wall.”Cranston said in an interview.

While most of the cards he collected as a child are gone, Cranston still has in his possession a card signed by Cal Ripken Rookie and a second card by Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. These baseball cards alone are enough to make any collector drool with envy. Still, when it comes to that part of the hobby, Cranston is definitely a celebrity that comes to mind.

Charlie Sheen

Although the actor is known for his questionable life decisions, there's no denying that Charlie Sheen is a true sports card collector. At some point in his career, he owned an incredible collection of baseball cards, which at the time served as the centerpiece of a sports club called the All-Star Cafe. Among the cards on display was Sheen's Honus Wagner T206.

Unfortunately, the card itself was stolen. Only recently was the Honus-Wagner graduated plate recovered. Since then, Sheensold most of his collectionbut remains an avid sports fan.

Erpel

The latest celebrity to make sports card headlines is none other than Drake. The Canadian rapper, known for his love of the Toronto Raptors, recently went on a massive shopping spree, picking up many of the latest Panini Flawless boxes.

While his search for the Triple Logoman card turned up nothing, the fact that the hobby is getting so much attention from everyone because of Drake is a victory in itself. With four of the five Triple Logoman cards available, collectors can expect the rapper to continue his search for him.

These six celebrities are just the tip of the iceberg. As the hobby gains more love with each passing day, it won't be a surprise to find that other stars soon started card collections of their own.
